LEYTE

Leyte played an important role during the 2nd world war- witnessing the dramatic return of General Macarthur to fulfill his promise to save the struggling Filipinos from the hands of the Japanese invaders. Leyte, known as Tandaya to early Filipinos, was renamed Filipina by Roy Lopez de Villalobos in 1543, a name that later extended to the entire archipelago. Leyte is blessed with naturally endowed areas which are pieces of “Eden on Earth”. Leyte today is designated as the regional capital of Region VIII, under the integrated reorganization plan. Leyte Province is located in Eastern Visayas Region, designated as the regional capital of Region VIII,

Leyte is subdivided into 40 municipalities and 3 cities.

Ormoc City is an independent component city of Leyte. The city governs itself independent of the province and the residents do not vote for elective provincial officials, as stated in the city’s charter.
