Palo Cathedral

Posted on February 29th, 2008 in CHURCHES by Anne

A chronological landmark in Palo is the Cathedral which was built in 1596 by Fr. Alonso de Humanes, The Palo cathedral has been rebuilt twice – in years prior to 1897 after damage by fire and tropical storm, and later in 1897 when a big tropical storm unroofed the church, damaged the convent and other houses in the townThe Palo Church was created a cathedral on March 27,1938 when Msgr. Guglielmo Piani, apostolic delegate, carried the papal bull from Rome, proclaimed it and erected the diocese of Leyte, designating Palo as its seat and Msgr. Manuel Mascarinas of Bohol its first bishopInside the patio of this church, enclosed by walls of Spanish stone and adobe, is an open esplanade where formerly Fr. De la Fuente kept his stall of fast native ponies, a zoological compilation of rabbits, turkeys, guinea pigs, a huge python fed with live pullets and a dovecote swarming with white pigeons. This esplanade used to be the people’s rendezvous when escaping from marauding moros in the days of the moro piracy centuries ago. It had also a huge well which provided water for drinking during the long months of dry spells. On the aperture on the Spanish walls is an insignia of the Jesuit order, center of attraction of visiting Jesuits when they come to Palo, indicating that the cathedral and the walls therein were originally Jesuit.

Tacloban City

Posted on February 23rd, 2008 in PLACES by Anne

The word Tacloban evolved from “Taklub”, a basket-like piece of equipment for catching fish. The city is well-known for its character in World War II, being a foremost base for the US forces and the first town liberated by Douglas MacArthur’s forces from the Japanese Imperial Forces. The city is also identified for being the hometown of the flamboyant former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, whose Romualdez family still commands a large political following in the area. At the time, the place was known as Kankabatok – meaning belonging to Kabatok, because its most outstanding inhabitant was named Kabatok. The change of name came about in this manner: Kankabatok was a favorite haunt for fishermen. They would use a bamboo tray called “taklub” to catch crabs or shrimps. When asked where they were going the fishermen would answer, “to tarakluban”, which meant the place where they used “taklub” to catch crabs. Later, the name was shortened to Tacloban. The capital of Leyte was transferred from one town to another with Tacloban as the last on February 26, 1830. The assessment to make Tacloban the capital was based on the following reasons: 1) Ideal location of the port and 2) Well-sheltered and adequate facilities. On June 12, 1952, Tacloban was proclaimed a chartered city by virtue of Republic Act No. 760.

Madonna of Japan

Posted on February 22nd, 2008 in PLACES OF INTEREST by Anne

Madonna of Japan, also well-known as Maria Kannon, was a endowment from the Japanese people to the Philippines as a symbol of peace and companionship between the two countries. As expected, it is also referred to as the sculpture of the Goddess of Peace. The picture stands on a rock amidst a landscaped garden. Tall trees and pretty flowering plants can be seen within the park along with tangible benches where one can sit, pray and reflect. But young locals have turned this sacred place into a lover’s lane.
